Not the sexiest topic I’ve ever written about, I’ll admit, but one I’ve been looking into lots lately! The hype for non-toxic, aluminium free & natural deodorants has taken over all my feeds and I got caught up in the fad.
First of all, I need to clarify a few things…
The research on the aluminium topic is not conclusive. There’s plenty of scientists who claim it’s totally fine with the other bunch claiming that your deodorant is slowly poisoning you. For me, if I can find a natural deodorant that works, I’ll take it over the artificial one any day. But I’ll let you make up your own mind on this one…
Secondly, deodorants & antiperspirants are two very different things. The three products I have tested are deodorants, which means they fight the odour of perspiration (how charming!) but will not stop you from sweating. So what you are looking at in an ideal scenario is a bit of moisture still coming through but none of the… smell. With antiperspirants, you are basically stopping the sweating altogether.
Personally, I am not a terribly sweaty person and can deal with a little bit of wet. But in cannot deal with the smell! So this whole experiment was very unnerving altogether. But I did it, survived it and here are my findings.
There’s plenty of ‘natural’ deodorants out there and in my first bout of testing, I went through three high-street options.
Bionsen Sensitive Stick Deodorant
This one looked intriguing but was a total disaster when it comes to the results. First of all, it has an odd smell, that slightly reminds me of an older gentleman’s perfume. The other thing – the texture is awful! It’s gloopy and sticky and you can feel it for a while after application.
I applied it at 7 am and by 11 am it was carnage! I will spare you the gory details but I was stuck in a meeting trying not to move too much! After I got out I ran to the bathroom to reapply my trusty Sure 48h antiperspirant.
The Biosen Deodorant is only €3.99 but I would definitely NOT recommend it! Unless you don’t sweat and are a fan of Old Spice maybe…
Tisserand Mint & Aloe Deodorant
Tisserand is actually a brand I love & I was really excited to try a deodorant from them. First impressions: it smells divine! It’s super fresh and smells like something you could eat! But… it doesn’t work. I really really wanted to love this product but it was not to be.
It worked a little better than the Biosen and was nicer to use by miles (it’s a lovely smelling roll-on) but after a few hours, I desperately needed to top up.
This particular scent has annoyingly been discontinued since I bought it but I had a smell of their other deodorants and the Rose & Lemon Leaf is gorgeous! Even though the product has failed as a deodorant I still use it over the top of my regular antiperspirant because I love the smell so much. It’s also really small so I tend to take it with me and use it on the go when I need a bit of a refresh.
If you’re into aromatherapy and want to spend €7.95 on a nice smelling roll on this is your guy! If you’re looking for a high performing product… keep moving!
Soft & Gentle 0% Aluminium Deodorant
This is a slightly confusing one. On the Boots.ie website it’s advertised as an antiperspirant deodorant but the can I have says dry deodorant on it. It is most definitely not an antiperspirant but it performed best by miles out of all three products.
I got a full day without topping up on less hectic days but there were times where I definitely had to re-spray in order to avoid socially unacceptable situations!
The product itself doesn’t differ in any noticeable way from your standard spray deodorants except for the lack of aluminium. I still much prefer a roll on to a spray but overall thought this is one I am happy to use most days. So if you are adamant on cutting aluminium from your cosmetics this is the best out of the three high street options. I still wouldn’t brave the gym or a hot day in the office with just this though!
The verdict overall: unless I am chilling on the couch I am still reaching for my trusty Sure antiperspirant. Just to be on the safe side!
I’ve not given up yet! I will be testing some higher end products next! Do you have any recommendations for a natural deodorant that actually works?
