Now that spring seems to be FINALLY upon us, I feel like it’s a good time to talk new skincare. I never generally talk about a brand as a whole when it comes to skincare – I like to pick out bits and pieces from lots of brands. But I really feel like The Ordinary deserves it!
The Ordinary cropped upon my radar when the lovely people from DECIEM gave us their primers to try out (I wrote about their High Spreadability Primer here). The primer intrigued me and I quickly found myself placing a big order of the skincare range. My order of six items came to around €45. Impressive! Especially that I purchased things like a retinol serum, a couple of highly concentrated hyaluronic acid products, as well as a couple of direct acids.
The Ordinary’s tagline is “Clinical formulations with integrity” and the entire brand was created to “(…) offer familiar, effective clinical technologies positioned to raise pricing and communication integrity in skincare.” The range boasts powerful active ingredients and truly competitive prices – the most expensive product in the range come’s in just below €15.
Lactic Acid 10% + HA 2%
One of my favourite products of the bunch is the Lactic Acid 10% + HA 2% solution. Having battled with acne since what seems like forever, skin texture is a major concern. Lactic Acid is a popular alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) frequently used in skincare as an exfoliant. This formula packs a punch but is gentle enough to be used every day (in the evening is best). I’ve been using this product regularly for a little over six weeks now and I love it – my skin is bright, smooth and visibly clearer! If a 10% concentration is too much for you or you’re a AHA newbie I would suggest picking up the Lactic Acid 5% + HA 2%. If you’re a fan of chemical exfoliators I can highly recommend this one, it’s €6.79 but performs like a high end product.
Advanced Retinoid 2%
Next up is the Advanced Retinoid 2%, another one of my faves from the collection. Retinol is a slightly contentious ingredient and has to be used with caution. It’s amazing at fighting signs of ageing and pigmentation but if you’re not carful with sun exposure it’ll give you the exact onsite effect.
The Ordinary Advanced Retinoid serum combines two forms of Retinol that is really effective at tackling anti-ageing treatment without the irritation. It takes care of fine lines, uneven skin tone, pigmenation and visible pores. It comes in at just under €10, which is quite incredible for such a great quality product! I’ve already bought one for my mum also.
Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG
I do realise that the dark circles under my eyes are mostly genetic and except for some serious surgery, there’s not that much I can do about them but I’m not prepared to completely give up here! I can definitely fight the puffiness and The Ordinary’s Caffeine Solution has been helping me with this lately.
The serum is made of a high concentration of Caffeine and EGCG (a green tea extract) and helps reduce swelling and the appearance of dark circles. It contains hyaluronic acid for extra hydration and feels absolutely amazing applied first thing in the morning (especially if you keep it in the fridge!).
For €6.70 (yes, I said €6.70!!!) you get 30ml of product which will last you forever!
Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA
The Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA cream is a very plain old moisturiser but in the very best sense of the word! It’s a no BS cream that is packed full of amazing ingredients to sooth, nourish and repair your skin. It includes essential fatty acids and ceramides which help restore skin’s natural protective and barrier functions and feels lovely, without leaving a residue.
It’s the perfect base for makeup. The only drawback is that if you use it daily, you will go through the tube reasonably quickly but at €5.80 you can just pick up a couple. It’s definitely one I will be repurchasing!
Azelaic Acid Suspension 10%
I’ve been suffering with breakouts, well, what seems like forever! After trying all sorts of medication I have given up and have my breakouts somewhat in check with diet and topical cosmetic treatments. I have tried a lot of products that claim to help with breakouts!
The Ordinary Azelaic Acid Suspension 10% promises to exfoliate, brighten the skin and treat pigmentation while reducing breakouts and blemishes. My breakouts are by no means completely gone, but I have to say, after using this product my skin was clearer and breakouts would go away faster.
The best thing about this – it’s super gentle, even people with Rosacea tendencies can use it which is pretty incredible! Because this product is only €7.20 it’s one that I would use over my chest and shoulders to make sure I keep my skin clear and breakout free.
I am itching to try more products from The Ordinary… on my list, at the moment, are the Organic Rose Hip Oil, the Glycolic Acid Toning Solution and, the one that everyone raves about, The Buffet serum!
Have you tried any of the products yet? Which ones are your faves? Let me know!
