This time of year, give me mulled anything and I will be happy! There’s nothing quite like a steaming hot mug of something delicious to warm you up on a winter’s night. Personally, I can’t get enough of mulled wine but it’s not everyone’s cup of tea (pun absolutely intended!). For those of you who are not fans of the tang of the classic mulled red, we have some fabulous alternatives. This week, it’s Mulled Apple Juice.
For this recipe it is best to use cloudy, farm-pressed apple juice – the regular supermarket stuff will be too sweet. I get the juice in the market but you can also get these in health food stores & most delicatessen. The rest is a mix of spices & a shot of something tasty like calvados, brandy or whiskey (totally optional!).
Mulled Apple Juice
For 2 servings you will need…
– 500ml of cloudy apple juice
– one teaspoon of honey (depending on the sweetness of your juice & your own preference)
– 2 cinnamon sticks
– 5 whole cloves
– 2 cardamom pods
– 1 star anise
– 1 bay leaf
– 5 peppercorns
All you need to do is…
… heay up (don’t boil) the juice and spices, then let them infuse on a very low heat for around 10 min. Taste the drink and adjust the sweetness if you need to. If you feel like it, add a shot of calvados, brandy or whiskey to the glass you will be serving the drink in, then add the mulled apple juice.
That’s it! It’s super simple and one of the best ways of warming yourself after a long winter walk.
