The clocks have gone back and the temperatures have dropped meaning we’re officially in winter – which I don’t think is such a bad thing. Sure it’s ten times more difficult to drag yourself out of the bed when the sun has yet to make an appearance, and being the coldest creature on the face of the earth I take my layering-up to arctic explorer levels, but that said there’s something cosy and romantic about winter nights, open fires, comfort food and dare I say it, the odd Christmas movie (too soon?!).
I constantly have the heating on from around this time of year right through to Easter, which barely keeps me from freezing but also tends to wreak havoc with my skin. I have dry/combination skin with the emphasis on dry come winter time. The combination of heating and harsh cold doesn’t sit well with my type of skin. I’m an absolute skincare geek and every year around this time I change up my skincare a little in favour of heavier cleansing oils and comforting serums.
Even in winter it’s important to keep up with sunscreen beneath your base. Sunscreen, water and sleep I still maintain to be the best things you can give your skin. As a living organ exposed to the elements, there’s also some little helping hands you can lend. Each week as it gets colder we’ll bring you a new winter skincare hero to keep you looking fresh faced and bright until things thaw out (most likely sometime around May…!).
Serum or moisturiser – or both? Ideally both. You can read more around what does what here, but in a nutshell a serum penetrates deeper layers of the skin while a moisturiser nourishes more outer layers. You may have come across the Voya brand in Spa’s (one of the lovelies massage’s I’ve had was a Voya massage at Lustybed Island Spa – heaven!) This serum is an intense organic blend of powerful antioxidants that are incredibly nourishing at this time of year.
Don’t be put off by the oil formula, it soaks into nothing in no time at all, allowing for your favourite moisturiser to be applied. The beauty of the Grapeseed, Pumpkin Seed and Pomegranate Seed oils (to name but a few) is not only that they’re naturally derived, but also that they really work on boosting radiance – something that the combination of harsh winter cold weather and central heating can really take from the skin. I’ve genuinely noticed a brightness to my skin since using this and I find just a really beautiful nourishing product for this time of year.
VOYA My Little Hero serum is priced €57.99 and available from voya.ie.
